Godwin Samarartne feels like my good friend now.

I traveled 20,000 miles to see him, I was just about a decade late since he died a while ago.  But I walked his land, sat in his space and curled up in his library where some of his teachings have been assembled.

I brought some of them back with me, like this one:

” I would like to say something about this plus and minus business.  In this culture I meet many people who are used to giving themselves minuses.  That is why when I spoke about meditation of loving-kindness, I mentioned that you have to develop loving-kindness towards yourselves.  you have to learn to see more and more pluses in yourself.  It is extremely important, as I have been often saying, that we should learn to feel happy about what we are doing.  We should feel grateful for what we are trying to do.  With more and more pluses you really experience more joy, more lightness, this happiness and gratitude.”  

Some of my largest shifts in my personal happiness came when I started to understand this concept of being my own best friend, of being loving and kind to myself.

But I’ll be honest, it was hard.

It took a long time and a ton of practice.

That’s why I love what Godwin is saying here.  I totally agree.  When life sucks, when you feel like you suck, when it feels hard to find things right about yourself to love—- then go add some pluses.

We’re all so focused on the negative, but I’ve built quite a cool life just adding more pluses.  In fact, there isn’t much negative that can’t be altered by a bunch of pluses.   ( like in my business, I can’t think of to many problems that can’t be fixed with a bunch more deals ).

It’s always simple, repeated truths that are most profound for me:  The work teaches you how to do it.

So I will set aside the negatives for a few minutes, and just add some positives.  I’ve found it literally changes the way everything else looks and feels.
