If you trust in ______________ , happiness will come.
If you work to cultivate _______________, forgiveness will come.
If you really lean on _________________, strength will come.
If you rely upon ________________ , success will come.
How do you fill in the blank? Can you?
How about one single word that is the universal answer…. is that even possible?
Or different words for different times and different circumstances?
Do you search for what it takes to find these qualities of happiness, peace, forgiveness, strength and success or do you just live each day and see how it goes?
I’ve asked a wide range of people this question and had all kinds of answers; God, love, mindfulness, compassion, faith, kindness, Dhamma, the truth, The present moment, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad….
The answer I like the most is: yourself.
I believe when you use the word yourself, you actually encompass all the other words because to trust and believe and cultivate and lean on yourself, you need all the rest.
In fact, I don’t know people who have a strong and healthy sense of self and who are whole and centered and authentic but aren’t actively trying to love more and judge less.
The ones I know… They’re practicing mindfulness and compassion as much as they can… they all are focused on change, they practice and study and fail and get back up.
They work hard at being kind rather than right and they speak the truth even when it hurts. They study wisdom teachings from a wide range of faiths and they fall to their knees readily recognizing the necessity and significance of it all.
If you trust in yourself, happiness will come.
If you believe in yourself, peace will come.
If you work to cultivate yourself, forgiveness will come.
If you really lean on yourself, strength will come.
If you rely upon yourself, success will come.
To really know yourself, I think, means to be enlightened, to know God.
